DEQ’s Public Meeting to Develop a Water Quality Cleanup Plan

February 21 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) invites you to attend an upcoming public informational meeting. Where, you will have the opportunity to offer your valuable input and learn more about how you can contribute to the restoration of our streams.

DEQ is in the process of developing a new implementation plan (IP) for a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) in Cedar Run, Lower Rapidan River, Mine Run and Mountain Run watersheds in the Rappahannock River Basin in Culpeper, Orange, and Spotsylvania Counties. The primary objective of the plan is to outline a comprehensive set of strategies and projects necessary to reduce pollution in specific streams below safe thresholds.

The proposed implementation plan will explain the pollutant reductions needed to meet the targets contained in both the Bacteria Mountain Run and Mine Run TMDL (2005) and Bacteria TMDL for the Rapidan River Basin (2007). Further, the plan will recommend a specific set of voluntary best management practices (BMPs) for agricultural lands, residential septic systems, pet waste, and urban practices, all aimed at reducing bacteria from entering the area’s streams. Support for the implementation plan will be provided by the Rappahannock River Roundtable and many other partners. The plan itself will include a comprehensive breakdown of expenses and a detailed timeline, designed to help achieve our water quality goals.

The initial meeting provides an opportunity to obtain development feedback. We look forward to your attendance!
